It certainly does if you came here because of the headline.

Today's subject:
"How to call for a reader's attention to start building an audience foundation."

I was wondering the other day (and of course, right now when I'm writing about it) how exactly does one get more attention in the brothel of attention whores; the Internet.

Whether it's just for a little while to send some quick information or to start building a solid base where your audience will sure come back to check upon whatever topic you decide to talk about.

So after not much consideration I decided I needed a strategy, and by that I mean copy someone else's.
First of all, I prayed to our Holy Father in the Heaves above, Saint Google about what type of techniques one should consider to start getting attention to a certain topic or opinion.

I read like, one and half articles about strategies, logistics, keywords, original headlines, defining audience and yadda yadda.

And then the epiphany struck me, much of what you read online requires certain factors to meet before you decide you want to incorporate whatever it is hiding behind that link and then another bunch of factors to support the idea of keeping the new information found.

So knowing those factors is the first step to call for someone's attention in the big ocean of screams.

The second step is of course, knowing your audience, this one is perhaps the most important, unless you just want to post stuff all around without caring so much about who reads what.

The third step to succeeding in this task is keeping your audience interested so that they may come back eventually to check on you. All this so far is basic stuff, a simple strategy that every freaking one in the internet is applying to do the exact same thing you want to accomplish.

This raises an obvious question: How do I stand out from the rest?

There are two very annoying answers for this.
First, come up with a wild and original idea that is so revolutionary everyone will want to take part of it just because it's new and crazy an maybe, just maybe, will be part of a future trend or movement. Great, now I have to squeeze my brain even harder to come up with something new, in a place where (mostly) everything is already invented. Whether you use humor, sarcasm, insightful references or meaningful quotes to inspire and make your readers feel smarter just by stepping inside your article.

Second, don't think of anything original at all and just stick with what you have hoping it will be enough to attract some peeking eyes and be humble and content that you posted your opinion and you'll get what you deserve if you believe that the Karmic universe will give you back what you provided in the first place.

None of these answers seems to have worked for me so far, trust me; I tried both (hard).

Another question: Am I offering something substantial?

This could go on for a while if I decide to analyze every single aspect of the matter.
But then you get to the core of what made you start your quest for the so desired eyes that will reflect what you expect they'll see from you: why do I need someone's attention to begin with.

Well of course everyone has their reason/s, mine consists in bringing as much attention as possible to a certain web comic a certain friend is doing and certain someone offered his help to spread the word about it. (Hint: guess who)

So far I tried:
-DeviantART: uploading concept art of the comic and writing meaningful descriptions and answering every comment, organizing, updating and keeping the gallery nice and clean. Writing journals with news, future content, current content being developed, etc.

-Facebook page: so now this web comic has a Facebook page (of course) that users may follow to be at the edge of whatever is happening with the above mentioned (see deviantart).

-Twitter: same as Facebook but in 140 characters.

-Fur Affinity: well of course it's (not another) furry comic, wink, wink. Otherwise what the hell am I doing here.

-The main site: I talked to the site's web programmer to start making some serious changes to the place to make it more "social network friendly" and other esthetic and practical changes to improve the site's efficiency.

Once you have done all that, and you were nice and cute about it and you also started following other people to let them know you're out there, you commented on their work and you made it all possible for your content to be fresh, unique and provided with outside notes and gossip and images and future products of the comic, etc.

AND YET! Your FB page has 9 likes and your Blue birdie thing only 7 followers (of which 3 are his best friends) You start to realize you either don't know what the fuck you're doing or the web comic sucks so bad everyone wants to stay completely away from it.

And that's the second (bigger) problem: there are thousands of furry web comics out there.

How do you sort out which ones are awesome, good, bad, mediocre, corrupt or just plain shit?

Well, I for start am willing to declare here and now that despite my friendship with the author, I'm completely honest when I say that I really, really like what he's creating and even more, I believe in what his art is becoming into, otherwise I wouldn't be going through so much trouble to help him get more readers, even less writing an article about it.

But then, how do you stand out from those which are fairly at the same artistic and narrative level as your web comic AND have a decent constant pool of fans going on.

"Keep your friends close and your enemies closer". Comes to my mind.

But that (and other) analysis will have to wait. For now I'll just turn to the Web pantheon and pray to the underworld viral gods for a blessing should you, casual reader, decide to go and check out "Furry Basket" at Geargraphics.net and get delighted at the subtle parodies, light comedy, sexy characters and dramatic romances of a story worth reading if you're the kind of furry who celebrates every aspect of what being a furry is all about.

Either that or you just enjoy whatching overly dynamic and dramatic fighting scenes.

Peace.

P.S: I'm not furry myself, but he's one of my best friends, so that's why I'm doing this for him :)
